What Is a Simple Sentence?

A simple sentence contains a subject (the person, place, or thing) and a verb (the action). It expresses a complete thought.

• Example: “The dog runs.”
  • Subject: The dog (Who or what is the sentence about?)
  • Verb: runs (What is the action?)
    

    Basic Sentence Structure

    The basic structure of a simple sentence is:

    • Subject + Verb + Object (optional)

    Examples:

    1. “I play.”(Subject: I, Verb: play)
    2. “She reads.”(Subject: She, Verb: Reads)
    3. “The cat sleeps.”(Subject: Cat, Verb: Sleeps)
    4. “The boy runs.” (Subject: boy, Verb: runs)
    5. “She dances.” (Subject: she, Verb: dances)
    6. “The bird flies.” (Subject: bird, Verb: flies)
